Personality:
Growing up, Jataro Kemuri spent his entire life being hated. From the time he was old enough to begin remembering things until now, that's been not only a constant in his life but what much of how he thinks and acts is based around. Not only was he a latchkey kid to begin with, but his mother was very neglectful on top of that. She also truly despised him, wishing he would die and being disappointed when he woke up and was still alive in the mornings. She didn't exactly hide this from him either, as the boy is fully aware of how she felt. On top of this, she also forced him to wear an ugly, patchwork mask which covered his entire head every day. "You don't look like other kids." He took all of this to mean that he is ugliest kid you could ever meet (though in actuality, she forced him to wear the mask because he was very beautiful, making her feel guilty for mistreating him and feeling how she did.) So ugly that "your eyeballs will burn off" if you see his face. The subject of removing his mask causes him great distress because of this. His mother was only one of many who seemed to hate Jataro though, his fellow Warriors of Hope not seeming to be overly fond of him (or outright cruel to him in Kotoko and Monaka's cases) and the other children boo'ing for him and cheering for Komaru when it was his turn to face her. He also internalizes a lot of his hatred as well, wishing he would die just as much as anyone else does. He'll accept the blame or blame himself for things that may or may not be his fault, or aren't always necessarily wrong and deserve blame, even apologizing for these things sometimes. He has very low self-esteem, fully believing he's as ugly and awful as everyone says, and will easily and willingly slip into self-depreciating talks.
Despite all of this, however, he is able to remain content and happy with his circumstances. He describes himself as "cheerful", though admits that he doesn't really know what that word means, though he's not exactly wrong saying that either. As a way to cope with how he's treated, Jataro has come to accept and seemingly love being hated, to the point of doing things purposefully to make others hate him. "I just have to believe that being hated makes me at peace. If I can do that, even when she tells me to die, I will always be at peace!" So, no matter what, he's able to keep a cheery and upbeat disposition.
Because he's used to being neglected and ignored, Jataro has grown up to be a rather quiet and shy kid. He's not the loudest person when he talks and can be easily ignored (wanting to ignore him and his ramblings aside). And while he doesn't like being ignored or pushed aside - complaining when Nagisa interrupts his introduction and finishes it before he can, and when Komaru and Touko talk over him when he's trying to speak with them - he returns to the background fairly easily in the end. Most likely because it feeds into the "everyone hates me and that's good" mindset.
Just because he's quiet and shy, however, doesn't mean he doesn't have a lot to say. When he talks he tends to ramble, not always staying on topic of the conversation. His thoughts are very disorganized and jumbled, and while carrying on a conversation about art for example, other things will slip in. Innocent questions or statements (like wondering if aliens exist), strange or bizarre opinions (pointing out that bird skin doesn't taste good no matter how it's cooked) or cruel and disturbing things; everything is fair game in the end and doesn't often actually relate to the conversation topic itself. This goes not only for topics other people bring up, but ones he addresses himself. He describes these things as "yawns" - things that come out of his mouth involuntarily, and admits that even he doesn't why he does it. These rambles tend to reveal not only how curious he is as he poses questions often and about any number of things, but also how disturbing and sadistic he can be. Offering to use a chisel to sign his name into someone's body, describing how someone's eyeballs would "explode", "burn off" or "melt" if they saw his face, describing how fun it is to kill adults and how he enjoys doing it. Talking about it isn't the only way that these traits show themselves. His hobby is making dioramas and after joining with the others as a Warrior of Hope and setting out to kill adults, he began to make his elaborate and fanciful dioramas using their corpses for centerpieces and decoration, which he gleefully shows off to Komaru as a means of encouraging her to hate him even more.
While dioramas may be his hobby (only hobby, he calls it), that's not the only area he excels in. Jataro attended the Hope's Peak affiliated elementary school and was given the title "Super Elementary School Level Arts and Crafts Period" for his amazing talent with everything arts and crafts related. From painting to sculpting to creating wooden figures and objects, if it's something that can be crafted he's able to do it with awe-inspiring skill. Much of what he does involves his talent, creativity and imagination and it's something he enjoys doing very much, evidenced clearly by the fact that he always has art tools on his person. Entering his room only proves this further; along with many projects, paintings, and drawings that can be found here and there, it's filled to the brim with canvases and art tools, and smells heavily of paint thinner.
Despite the fact that he believes they hate him with all their hearts, Jataro cares about his fellow Warriors a good deal. In spite of how cruel they can be to him (in Monaka and Kotoko's cases), how they ignore him, and how they mis-attribute his actions (saying Masaru fixed the air conditioner and chairs when it was really Jataro), he still enjoys taking part in the Demon Hunting game with them and working towards paradise together. He does his best to help around their hideout if things need fixing, proving that he's rather handy to have around. After Masaru is defeated by Komaru, Jataro is shown to be remorseful that the other boy "died", agreeing that he was a good person and wishing that he had died instead of their leader. Not only this, but rather than be suspicious of how Monaka would often go off on her own, he was more worried for her well being, thinking that maybe it was simply an upset stomach causing her to leave.
Though this could also in part be due to how easily manipulated he is as well. Like the other Warriors, he fully believed in the "children's paradise" plan Junko and Monaka had given them, not at all realizing that neither had meant it genuinely. Junko had wanted to spread despair, and Monaka was looking to use them (and all of the other children) to attempt to make a "successor to despair". But he still viewed and treated her like their princess. Even though Nagisa brought up good points to try and prove that Masaru may not have actually been dead, Jataro was on Monaka's side as she insisted he was. Junko's manipulation of him was very different, but just as easy. Claiming that she was the only one who ever loved him, he was extremely upset that she'd been killed, describing the adults who did so as even uglier, nastier trash than he is for it. He was so starved for attention that it only took a little affection from her to have him more than willing to follow and believe her (even leading him to harbor a babysitter type crush on her).
